POLICE DEPARTMENT NEWS
On November 9, 2011, the Etna Police Department was awarded a gold plaque by the AAA (Triple AAA) Association for its “outstanding performance of traffic safety”. This included enforcement of traffic laws, D.U.I.’s, Truck Task Force and child safety activities such as the bike rodeo, the Cops VS Kids basketball game, participation in school programs and annual updated training for the school crossing guards. This was the first year Etna was considered for this annual award and out of four new awardees, the only Department to achieve a gold level award! CONGRATULATIONS ETNA POLICE DEPARTMENT – your commitment to the community and its residents is outstanding! Mayor Rengers presented the plaque at the Council meeting in November.
BOROUGH NEWS
GTECH Company, a business devoted to Green initiatives was approached by the Shadyside Academy about the possibility of installing and maintaining a sunflower garden in the Borough of Etna as a school project. The company researched numerous vacant lots located within the Borough (private and public) and tentative plans are being drawn up for a vacant lot on Butler Street that they selected.
The engineering/design portion of the Dewey Street rehabilitation project was completed in December through a grant received from the Community Infrastructure and Tourism fund of Allegheny County. The Borough is working closely with state agencies for the construction phase of this rehabilitation project.
This year as an additional service from our refuse hauler, Waste Management, home generated special waste collections were provided as part of our normal refuse pickup service. This program began on September 1. A summary of what was collected through December 31 is as follows:

| Non-Hazardous Waste: | 94.50 lbs. (Latex paint) |
A total of 435.33 pounds was generated and collected in Etna and 100% of those materials were recycled! Keep up the good work!

Reminders From Your Borough Office
Property Owners, ordinance 1091 requires occupancy registration on an annual basis as well as when tenants move in and out of properties. If the property is vacant, we need to know that as well. Accurate occupant information is vital in utility billing and can help you when your properties are vacant as charges are obviously different for vacant properties, but only if timely notification is received by the Borough.
Sidewalks must be cleared of snow and ice within 24 hours of a snowfall or ice storms per borough ordinance.
Garbage cans must not be placed out prior to 6:00 p.m. or dusk the night before trash pickup and must be taken back in by midnight the following day.
Pets must be kept on a leash when being walked and cleaned up after..
Dumping yard waste (fall leaves, etc.) into any of the streams or storm runs located within the community is illegal. Litter tossed on to the local roads can end up in our combined sewer system and cause serious problems to downstream neighbors. Anyone caught draining oil and other liquids from their vehicle into a storm drain will be prosecuted to the fullest extent that the law allows.
